Description
The specimen is a placenta measuring 10.5 cm in maximum extent with an attached portion of
umbilical cord. The umbilical vessels leave the cord and run between the amnion and smooth
chorion before reaching the placenta. The features are those of a velamentous insertion of the
umbilical cord. There is a moderate degree of retroplacental haemorrhage.
History
Retroplacental haemorrhage with fetal death at 24 weeks gestation.
